I'm not a writer. I'm not an artist.
I'm not a philosopher. I'm not a sociologist.
I'm not a professor. I'm not a pupil.
I'm not a dreamer. I'm not a nihilist.
I'm not a pessimist. I'm not an optimist.
I'm not a majority. I'm not a minority.
I'm not a gray area. I'm not full colour.
I'm not a revolutionary. I'm not a reactionary.
I'm not simple. I'm not complex.
I'm not in politics. I'm not the people.
I'm not an individual. I'm not the group.
Then what am I? Am I me?
As I sit with my head pressed against this door I think these thoughts in my dingy apartment. Then I realize.
I am a realist. There's more I'm not then I am.

I'm going to take a bold leap back aboard our appreciation for archaic cultural sayings with:
'Boss'.
And I will say "ragamuffin". I seem like an angry teen in this piece. I am slightly displeased.
That's because I think you've strayed too far from your true written voice.
I was reading through all the archives: I spent about 6 hours reading through every post and every comment since the very beginning, and I think you were much closer to your voice in the beginning. John, I think you have the potential to be like Hunter Thompson, you are very academically smart, and very funny-very witty.
I think you should read through your much older stuff, and channel your commentaries, the non-sequiturs, the absurdist humour and the witty comparisons.
Take your written humour seriously, meaning put effort into it, and make it something cojent- really think out your comparisons and comic devices, and you'll have something amazing.
Andrew and I were struggling to find our voice- I for one was quite distressed to read some of the absolutely shitty writing I was doing back then when I got lost writing in the wrong voice.
We wanted you to take things seriously, but what I really wanted you to do was to take YOUR style seriously, not to act serious.
I eagerly await your magnum opus:
'Fear and loathing in Coquitlam'- perhaps? lol
*Cogent*
John I think would develop more of a "Anxiety and Twitching is Burnaby" I think. but I do agree with all those nice things you said about him.
