Ignorance

Teenagers have a natural rebellious behavior. We all seek to develop an opinion of our own, and often this search leads us to a conflict with the traditional beliefs of our society. Traditional society of course being Christian. This rebellious attitude against Christian beliefs has spawned such popular fads as "The DaVinci Code." Unfortunately, it also spawns irrational anti-Christian opinions, and effectually causes the public to acknowledge the average believer to be a right wing neo-fascist.

We all already recognize teenagers as being rebellious, so to a certain extent, we simply roll our eyes. But what happens when this attitude continues into adulthood? Should we continue to roll our eyes? Should we tolerate their ignorance? I recently read several reader comments in the "Vancouver Sun" newspaper about several issues, all religious, and I am ashamed to say not one well-informed person, with a logical, intelligent opinion, either replied, or had their letter printed.

I respect differing opinions, but I cannot help becoming enraged when a clearly immature child, or adult, presses upon others their irrational opinion based on little more than popular culture and misinformation. Our culture is not a Christian one. Our populace publicly denounces Christianity, and with frequency takes delight in poking fun at Jesus Christ, where Muslims, Buddhists, or any other religious group would demand a public apology.

In a nation with standards as high as ours, we respect those with differing opinions. So why must ours not be heard? Why must we be silent, and endure this onslaught of public hatred and mockery based only on ignorant opinions? With a policy of tolerance, why must we not be tolerated? Our government preaches high ideals, and our people make a farce of them.

I am no Republican. I do not agree with either the notion that all Christians must be right-wing pseudo-fascists, nor do I agree with whatever truth may be behind it.

It is time for the public to dispense with their infantile opinions, and mature into a truly intelligent, free-thinking populace, rather than an ignorant, irrational group of blind and deaf lone wolves; vicious and misinformed.

So, let us now ask the question as to why so many are disinclined towards christianity. Heaps of horridness has been done in 'Christ's name,' similar to the terrorist attacks done by 'Muslims.' It leads the public to believe that those who participate in such religions act in the same way. And then there are the hypocritic bastards that deface the reality of Christianity.

There's the church which has made itself hypocritic in an attempt to rid the world of 'sin;' the church created the idea of of the 'Sunday christian' and thus brougt judgement from the world upon itself. Christianity should be about the love of Christ. The important things, as Jesus says in Matthew are: justice, mercy, and faithfulness.

However, the church has turned Christianity into a facade of rituals. Christians have made themselves self-righteous, stating that they shouldnt - and implying that they dont - do bad things. It's more than just sinning that they dont do, they run from everything that can lead to tempation in the slightest - drinking, smoking, tv shows with swearing.

So maybe there really isnt a problem with not doing these 'bad things,'but their judgement on the poeple who do these things. What would happen if a female who did coke and was rather, 'easy' came to church one day...would the community of christians really show her love, or would the majority be avoiding her and gossiping about her in the corners? I can tell you that at South Delta Baptist, though there may be the odd person or two that'd talk to her, most would be defacing her.

So as a conclusion - what society believes is Christianity is pretty much reality. 'Saved' is like a real Christian school. True, this isnt what Christianity based on Christ is- but this is what we have made Chritianity into. Thankfully there seems to be arising a new generation that's overthrowing the old and accepting people a hell of a lot more.

Read 'Blue like Jazz' by Donald MIller. Awesome book.

....oooh. Did Jesus get drunk? I'm inlined to think he did at some point or another.

Good article and good responce. I find that the articles in papers such as The Vancouver Sun do show great ignorance of definitions/reality and therefore become dogmatic, monological and scientificly ignorant in their own right.

J.S. Mill once wrote that "all silencing of discussion is the assumption of infallibility". Whether it be religious/unloving "Christians" or arrogant and uninformed scientists people have a huge problem with carrying on real dialogue. Arguments will continue to swirl and people will continue to get hurt if people don't stop being dogmatic. It is only with the admission of ignorance to every knowable thing in existence that people can avoid becoming dogmatic and get on with the business of being, of existing and truly loving the other.

On another note I do not think that Christians should howl for appologies and tolerance. I don't care what people say about my beliefs because I know my beliefs to be transient opinions based on my limited vision of existence. (Note: I do not identify myself with the Christian religion, but rather with Christ, and that is a huge difference.) If one does not have a strong enough sense of self to let couterarguments slide off their backs then they need to reevaluate thier sense of self. If Christians really believe that Christ can save them then they should not care about the silly words of humans.

I would also disagree with the last sentence of this article, although it is very poetic. It is not the lone wolves that are dangerous, but those who are satisfied to be herded sheep spending their days chewing as much grass as possible. To be a free-thinker one must be a lone wolf, but a lone wolf that can from time to time attempt to understand the other.

I am rambling, so I must go. Revalue your Existence! and eat more cheese...

Is being a content sheep really such a problem? The majority of people in the world need to focus on survival. On Maslow's heirarchy of needs they achieve the bottom couple levels - if they arent struggling to find food, then they are parnoid about their own safety; some are fortunate enough to be concerned with a general feeling of acceptance. These people are concerned with what they see and experience, this is what they argue - not what could potentially be out there.
To add to this, most people have an average IQ, which is not high by any means.
Humans are raised in the habits of their society and adopt these habits in turn. Should these individuals be blamed for their beliefs? Or rather should those that have manipulated them be held responsible for the ignorance.

All i can say is that if i were more simply minded than i am, life would be a hell of a lot easier, and much, much less confusing.

Being able to see the problems in society, why bother saying anything if you arent about to change it?

It's no use to yell at people and tell them they are wrong - there's little evidence which they experience to justtify such. Show them your reality instead.

very nice John...anyways as has just been demonstrated by well..sorry Pretty One..ignorance is chosen and has very little to do with IQ. Psychology tries to quantify the human psychy, but have been unsuccessful. Intelligence is just one of the facets were psychology purports more knowledge than we actually have. Ignoramus!- we know nothing!

Understanding is a state of mind, or rather a state of being, of existing in eternity by acknowledging the vastness of reality beyond our corporeal pig sty. One may be happier being an ignorant sheep, but it is a huge assumption to claim that happiness is a good thing, both instrumentally and non-instrumentally. I'll leave it at that for now. Let's go read some Dostoevsky and then live underground with cheese.
